Bonn Cathedral

Gerhard von Are-Strase 5, 53111 Bonn, Germany

Description:

Bonn Cathedral is not only a famous monument of architecture and history, recently it has the highest papal title "Basilica minor". Legend has it that the founder of the temple is Saint Helena, who built a small wooden church at the grave of Roman soldiers Florence and Cassia, who took a painful death. They have since become patron saints of Bonn. By the second half of the 11th century, a beautiful three-nave basilica with two high towers was erected on the site of a small church, and over the next 200 years the building was repeatedly lengthened, expanded and rebuilt. The extant appearance of Bonn Cathedral was formed mainly in the middle of the 13th century.

The overall silhouette of the monastery is determined by five towers of different shapes and heights. The three-level apse, framed by two slender towers and girdled with a dwarf gallery, became a model for subsequent church construction in the Rhineland. After visiting the temple, you will see that there is a timid breath of Gothic. Near the altar are two small sculptures dating from the 12th century. One of them is called the “Writing Angel.” In 1610, in the middle nave of the cathedral, a bronze statue of St. Helena was installed.
