Koblen Gate
Description:
Koblen Gate is the main gate of Archangel Michael, built in the Baroque style. Previously, they served as a meeting place for the eponymous knightly order. The facade of the gate is decorated with a gilded figure of Michael killing a dragon.
The gate was erected in the period 1751-1757 by order of the Elector Clemens Augustus on the project of François dem Alterin. The upper part of the gate depicts the personification of the four virtues of the Order of St. Michael: religiosity, perseverance, strength and loyalty. The structure in the form of an arch is located on the road leading to the city of Koblenz.
The figure of Michael slaying the dragon is a reproduction, and its original is kept in the university lecture hall. The arch was severely damaged during the war, but was later restored. The administrative offices of the University of Bonn are now located in the gate.
