Rhododendron Park

Deliusweg 40, 28359 Bremen, Deutschland

Description:

One of the many attractions of the German city of Bremen is the Rhododendron Park, opened in 1933 on the basis of former agricultural land and forests. Initially, the park featured collections of plants from Mexico and the Caucasus, as well as local medicinal herbs, including poisonous specimens. Until 1935, Bremen Rhododendron Park was privately owned, and then was transferred to the possession of the city authorities. The collection of the park was formed in 1949-1950. Currently, the park is considered the largest natural center in Germany.

The territory of the Rhododendron Park is thematically divided into several sections. The most popular of them is the Azalea Park – a huge landscape park with streams and lawns, which grows many different species of azaleas, as well as old beech and oak trees. In the center of the Bremen Rhododendron Park is a sector called Rhododendron Forest – the oldest part of the park, dotted with dense vegetation. In total, there are more than 2000 varieties of rhododendrons, the first of which was planted in 1936.
