Berggarten Garden

Herrenhä user Straß e 4, 30419 Hannover, Germany

Description:

Berggarten Garden (literally “mountain garden”), which is the oldest botanical garden in Germany. It was founded in 1666 by Duke Johann Friedrich as the most common garden gardens. However, under Sofia of Hanover it turned into a garden with exotic plants, and in 1686 the first greenhouse appeared here.

In the 20s of the XVIII century, the central alley of the garden was laid, which crosses it almost along its entire length and leads to the entrance to the Welfian mausoleum (the mausoleum of King Ernst Augustus and his wife Frederick) in the form of an ancient temple with a Doric portico. By the middle of the 18th century, Berggarten lost its importance as a court garden and vegetable garden, since then it has become only a botanical garden. Built in the XIX century, the mansion of the main gardener is now given to the library of the botanical garden. In recent years, a tropical greenhouse and a marine aquarium with sharks and sea turtles have been added to the Berggarten ensemble.
