St. Peter's Cathedral in Bremen

Sandstra ß e 10, 28195 Bremen, Germany

Description:

St. George's. Petra with two tall 98-meter towers has a 900-year history. During all this time, he repeatedly rebuilt and changed his appearance.

At first, a wooden church stood on the site of the cathedral, which was built in 789. A new cathedral to replace the wooden was built in the XI century. Since then, it has been repeatedly attacked and destroyed, but has been restored each time.

Initially, the cathedral was Catholic, and then Lutheran, which significantly influenced the interior of the temple. In the XIX century the church was restored, giving it the style of the Romanesque Renaissance, and the interior was preserved in the Gothic style. The western and eastern towers are the oldest parts of the temple.

The temple contains a sculpture of Christ of the XI century and a Romanesque font of the XII century with 38 bas-reliefs. In the crypt of the temple rest the remains of more than 90 ministers of the church. There are 9 mummies in the lead cellar. Also in the cathedral exhibit objects found during its restoration.

An interesting fact is a running mouse carved on one of the doors of the church, which tourists are offered to find guides. It is believed that in the churches of Germany there are as many as 4 such mice!
