Betterstrasse Street
Bottcherstra ß e, 28195 Bremen, Germany
Description:
The length of the street Betterstrasse is only 100 meters, but there are many monuments of culture and architecture. Here you can find museums, cafes, restaurants, shops, hotels and houses, which are among the cultural attractions of the city. And the opportunity to listen to the ringing of the Bremen bells simply cannot be missed!
The history of Bötterstrasse dates back to the Middle Ages, although most houses were built between 1922 and 1931. Initially, the street was an important link between the market and the Weser River, but in the middle of the XIX century, due to the transfer of the port, the street began to lose its importance.
In its current form, the street exists thanks to the efforts of the coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius, who since 1902 began to buy houses on Betterstrasse and with the help of architects Scotland, Runge and sculptor Bernhard Hetger to turn them into what we now see. In 1934, the street acquired its present appearance, and since then it has been a unique ensemble of architecture with elements of expressionism and mythology.
Walking along the Betterstrasse, you can visit the Roselius Museum, which presents a collection of the heyday of the traditions of the Hanseatic merchants, the house of Paula-Becker-Moderzon, in which the museum is located, where her paintings are presented. Be sure to look into the courtyard, where there is a small fountain "Bremen musicians", and nearby sheltered pastry shop, where they will feed lollipops and show how to cook them.
This and much more awaits you on the small street of Betterstrasse.
