Westphalenpark

Description:

Westphalenpark in Dortmund is located in the northern part of the Westphalia-Emscher valley. The river forms the southern boundaries of the park. Back in the XIX century, the wealthy citizens of Dortmund decided to establish a public park and purchased land for this purpose on the southern outskirts of the city, where the Kaiser Wilhelm Grove was founded.

Trees were planted on the territory of the grove, recreation areas were created. In the early twentieth century, the grove was expanded, several pavilions and dance halls were built here. A restaurant was opened on the pond.

During World War II, the Kaiser Wilhelm Grove was severely damaged. In the early 50s, the park was restored. In 1959, a national garden exhibition was held in Dortmund. By this event, the grove was significantly expanded, thickets and landfills were destroyed in the adjacent territory, various trees were planted and flower beds were equipped. That's how Westphalenpark was created.
