Dortmund

Lake Phoenix See

Description:

Once on the territory of a prestigious and well-maintained neighborhood on the shore of the artificial lake Phoenix See (Phoenix-See) there were metallurgical plants, including Phoenix AG with blast furnaces, rolling mill, etc. In 1906, this enterprise merged with the mining and metallurgical concern Herder. As a result, a joint stock company was created, which became known as Phoenix West.

In the 60s of the last century, the first signs of a crisis in the metallurgical industry appeared, which intensified by the early 90s. Trying to survive, "Phoenix West" merged with the concern "Hash", which subsequently absorbed "Tussen Krupp". But the crisis was not overcome in 2001. Steel smelting stopped in Dortmund and factories were moved to China.

But Dortmund has not forgotten its thriving industrial past and the city has decided to reclaim the abandoned industrial zone. They decided to revive the area in a new way. Just as the legendary phoenix bird is reborn from the ashes, so this urban area was to be reborn to a new life. The name "Phoenix" for Dortmudians is not only a symbol of rebirth, but the historical memory of his famous enterprise "Phoenix West".
