St. Maximilian's Church

Maxplatz 1, 40213 Dusseldorf, Germany

Description:

The Church of St. Maximilian, located in the German city of Düsseldorf, is one of the favorite places of Catholic pilgrims from all over Germany. The church was built by Franciscan monks in the XVII century in Renaissance style with arched windows, several domes topped with crosses. Since the beginning of the XIX century, the church bears the name of St. Maximilian, martyred in 295 for refusing to serve in the Roman army.

The interior of the temple is unique due to the painting of the walls, made by the students of Rubens. In the chapel of the church there is a miraculous image of the “Madonna with merciful eyes”. The world fame of the church was brought by the fact that in its primary church, and then in the Lyceum at the church, from 1804 to 1814, the famous poet Heinrich Heine studied.

Since the beginning of the XXI century, the Church of St. Maximilian acts as a parish church. It has a recreated lyceum of Franciscans, the city council of Catholics, a kindergarten and a charity service.
