St. Margaret's Church in Düsseldorf

Description:

St. Margaret's Church is the parish church of the Gerresheim district in Düsseldorf. It is located 7 km east of the old town, at Gerricusstraß e 9.

The church was built in the XIII century in the monastery of St. Hippolyte. During this period, the monastery flourished - in his possession was a lot of land, he received large income, then built a church.

As a classical basilica, the church has one raised central nave and two lower naves on the sides, the eastern facade is crowned by a two-storey octagonal tower with a pointed roof. Overall, it is an unusually beautiful building. The octagonal tower is decorated with intricate windows, ornament and triangular completions, which are directed upwards as a continuation of the tower’s high corrugated roof.

In 1790, the church was opened to parishioners, and in 1803 the monastery was dissolved. The church was renovated many times, the last time - from 1932 to 1950. In 1982, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title and privileges of a “small basilica.” In the same year, a new organ appeared in the church.
