Benrat Palace
Benrather Schloß allee 100-106, 40597 Dusseldorf, Deutschland
Description:
One of the many architectural attractions of Düsseldorf is the Benrat Castle, located on the banks of the Rhine. This beautiful structure was erected in the Rococo style at the behest of Karl-Theodor - Elector of the Palatinate and Bavaria. The design of the palace, its auxiliary wings and a beautiful park was developed by the famous architect Nicolas de Pigages. Construction began in 1755, and was completed only at the end of 1770. The completed Benrat Palace acquired the features of early classicism.
The kitchen of the castle was connected to the main structure in the west wing by an underground tunnel. Earlier, to the south of the castle were located the so-called "greenhouses", where in the tubs wintered numerous tropical trees that decorated the paths of the park in the summer. There is currently a regional library here.
The park of Benrat Palace has the shape of a regular square. It is adjacent directly to the bank of the Rhine, unlike the main buildings located away from the river. From the north-west a small artificial pond of round shape adjoins it. On its shore built representative buildings - the main building of the Benrat Palace and two side wings.
