Oberkassel bridge
Description:
Oberkasseler Brucke (German: Oberkasseler Brucke) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Rhine that connects the Old Town with the left-bank district of Oberkassel. Like all other bridges of Düsseldorf Oberksslsky bridge was blown up on March 3, 1945 by the retreating troops of the Wehrmacht. On the same day, Oberkassel was occupied by American troops.
In the same year, a pontoon bridge was built, which was badly damaged by the icebreaker of 1947, and the bridge was finally dismantled in December of the same year after a ship collision. In 1948, a lightweight bridge for tram and road traffic was built on this site.
From 1969 to 1973, Hein, Lehmann & Co built a new bridge, designed by architect Friedrich Tamms. The bridge was built slightly higher upstream of the Rhine in order not to demolish the existing bridge and not to interrupt the movement of traffic. After the demolition of the temporary bridge on April 7-8, 1976, a unique operation was carried out to move the new bridge to its current location. The structure weighing 12,500 tons was moved to 47.5 m.
