Lake Aaze
Mecklenbecker Strase, 48151 Munster, Germany
Description:
Lake Aase is a reservoir located on the Münstresch-Aga River in Münster, Germany. It was created in 1934 to protect citizens from annual floods. The lake has an elongated shape, directed to the northeast. The depth of the reservoir reaches 2 meters, then in winter it completely freezes. Since the creation of the lake, the city of Munich has acquired such new sports as rowing and sailing.
The first attempt to build the lake was made in 1914, but World War I became an obstacle to achieving the goal. After another flood, the mayor Georg Sperlich ordered the work to continue, and in 1934 the lake was completely completed. From 1972 to 1976, regular construction works were carried out, which increased the area of the lake, which today is 40.2 hectares.
Now Lake Aase, whose length is 2.3 kilometers, attracts many tourists, as on its shore is the Münster Zoo with an annual festival of balloons and pirate regattas, the Muhlenhof Museum, telling about the craft and peasant culture of the XVII-XX centuries, a couple of restaurants, a sailing club and a boat station.
