Old Town Hall of Düsseldorf

Marktplatz 2,40213 Dusseldorf, Germany

Description:

The old town hall, located in the German city of Düsseldorf, is still used for its intended purpose - the city administration meets here. The building, built of red brick without plaster, entwined with ivy in the summer, consists of three outbuildings.

The oldest wing was built in 1570-1572 in a mixed style with features of the late Gothic - island tower, corner porticoes, and Renaissance - an equal number of windows and strict geometric shapes, designed by architect Alexander Pasqualini. In the XVIII century, this part of the town hall was rebuilt, and the facade of the building acquired the features of the Rococo style - pilasters, visually separating the floors, an openwork balcony above the entrance.

The second wing acquired its modern appearance of a classical building in the 20s of the XX century. The third wing of the town hall was built of yellow brick with stone elements in 1883 in the Neo-Renaissance style with a rounded corner, which before the Second World War was decorated with a steep tent. The most notable part of the town hall is the 5-storey octagonal tower, which is richly decorated with a pseudo-Greek-style statue, openwork balcony and clock. It serves as the central entrance to the building.
