Baldenai Castle
Freiherr-vom-Stein-Strase 386A, 45134 Essen, Germany
Description:
Baldenai Castle is located in the south of Essen, one of the oldest German cities with a population of 600,000. The history of Essen begins with the emergence of Verdun Abbey and dates back to 800 AD. The castle is located on the shore of pretty Lake Baldenai. Despite the fact that the lake is artificial, tourists come to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature, spend free time and taste history.
The castle was built in 1226 by Adolf von Marc, a representative of the ancient noble family of Marcs. At that time, the castle was used as the residence of Verdun Abbey. In 1432, the castle became the property of Theodoricus von Leyen and was soon laid down in connection with the bankruptcy of the family.
The castle often changed its owners, as it was passed on as a dowry along the female line.
Today, the castle complex is in the form of three buildings. The main building, once the lord's house, includes a three-storey tower with wings that served as a stable and an apartment for servants. The building is made in the style of romanticism.
