Linnep Castle

Linneper Weg 17, Ratingen, Germany

Description:

Linnep Castle is located in the town of Ratingen and is known to the inhabitants as a castle on the water. It was first mentioned in the monastery writings of the XI century. The estate was a large master center, in which several families lived.

The Linnep family lived in the castle until 1461. Soon the castle was transferred to the Hohenlimburg family. 1731 for the castle was characterized by multiple changes of owners. In 1855, the building was bought by Count Ferdinand von Spee, who built an additional wing and housed an archive of the Mettmann district. The castle is now owned by a farmer living with the von Spee family in the castle.

The most ancient elements of the castle are the designs of the XII century: the central tower, made in the Romanesque style, as well as individual elements of the fortress wall. The castle is located in the valley of the Himmelsbach stream, through which three bridges are built. The main entrance of the castle is located in front of the facade, which is represented by a staircase leading to the first floor and towering above the basement of the main building.
