Westerwinkel Castle

Horn-Westerwinkel 5, Ascheberg-Herbern, Germany

Description:

Westerwinkel Castle is located in Ascheberg, near Münster. The architecture of the building is made in the Baroque style. The “highlight” of the castle can be called the shutters of small windows decorated in the traditions of folk art of Westphalia. The structure of the castle is represented by an open quadrangle. In addition, the whole complex is located on two rectangular islands. On the eastern island there are buildings, and on the western island there is a garden. At first, the castle may seem gloomy due to its defensive structures of the Thirty Years War: high walls and deep trenches.

Castle-fortress Westerwinkle has a long history, dating back to the VIII centuries. This time for Westerwinkle was characterized by a frequent change of owners. The first facts about Westerwinkle date back to 1225. But in its current "baroque" form, the castle was built in 1663. The castle is still owned by the von Merfeldt dynasty.
