Frankfurt - in the places of Goethe
Description:
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born on August 28, 1749 in Frankfurt am Main. Many places and attractions still resemble a writer and thinker, poet and politician.
In the footsteps of Goethe in Frankfurt
I was born in Frankfurt am Main on August 28, 1749, at noon with the twelfth bell. Thus Johann Wolfgang Goethe describes his own birth in Poetry and Truth. Although Goethe later had a difficult relationship with his hometown, it was the city of his childhood and youth. Here he moved through the streets of the old town and was present in preparation for the royal elections and coronations, which he later describes in his autobiographical novel. Also in Frankfurt, when he was a young man, he witnessed the execution of Suzanne Margarete Brandt, a maid who killed her illegitimate child. Her fate touched Goethe deeply. Years later, having painted the image of Gretchen, in his most famous work, Faust, he made a memorial to the infant killer. Time and again it was the Frankfurt Experience that determined the motives for his work. A bit of the atmosphere of this time can still be caught today as you walk around Frankfurt.
Goethe's house
The most important target for Goethe lovers in Frankfurt is the poet's birthplace on the Great Hirschgraben 23-25. The first stone for this house was probably laid by Johann Wolfgang himself at the age of about 5 years. Even today, a walk around Goethe’s house gives visitors a vivid impression of how people lived during Goethe’s time.
Historically, the most important is the "poet's room" on the third floor, in which Johann Wolfgang Goethe lived as a child and adolescence. Here he also wrote the work for which he first became famous: The Suffering of Young Werther. As before, on the wall you will see the silhouette of Charlotte Buff, Goethe’s first great love, which he immortalized as the “Lotta” in Werther.
During our walk we will walk through the places where Goethe spent his time as a child. Where he attended a young Mozart concert as a five-year-old. The house where his aunt lived, where his mother moved after his father's death
