The Temple of John of Kronstadt

Vor dem Holstentor 1, 20355 Hamburg, Deutschland

Description:

The Church of John of Kronstadt is an ancient church in the Neorman style, which is an integral part of the spiritual culture of Hamburg.

The church is a young community of the Moscow Patriarchate in Germany.

The church opened its doors in January 2001. The beginning of the work was marked by the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The name was given to the community due to the close ties between Hamburg and the northern capital of Russia.

The building itself is an architectural building of Neorman style. Construction took place in the early twentieth century. A century later, the church was handed over to the Russian Orthodox community, which had previously been huddled in a kindergarten sports hall. Major repairs brought the structure to its proper appearance. Orthodox crosses and domes were installed, as well as a marble iconostasis decorated with frescoes. The temple is located between the prison and the court.

Nowadays the parish consists of both Russians and Germans. Russian and German are taught here with children and adults. There is also a Sunday school for children, as well as a large number of excursions telling about the history of the Orthodox Church. An important part of the activities of the temple are meetings with young people.
