The Beatles Square

Beatles-Platz, Hamburg, Germany

Description:

The square, named after the “Liverpool Four”, is located in the St. Pauli area at the corner of Riperbahn and Grosse Freiheit. In the center of the Beatles Square is a monument, only instead of the “four” there are five steel musicians.

This is due to the fact that at the beginning of their career, the band that came here to play consisted of five members (first it was played by bassist Stuart Sutcliffe). His sculpture stands a bit apart from the rest of the participants. Another figure depicts the collective image of the then drummer Pete West and the current Ringo Starr.

The construction of the square with the monument cost 550 thousand euros. It is built in the form of a record with a diameter of 29 meters. The idea of perpetuating the band belonged to the Oldy 95 radio station. At night, the sculptures are illuminated by lamps mounted in granite and a stroboscope. Therefore, the legendary “four” is perfectly visible day and night.
