St. Peter's Cathedral in Hamburg

Monckebergstra ß e 23, 20095 Hamburg, Germany

Description:

St. Peter’s Cathedral, located in the German city of Hamburg, is considered the oldest functioning church in the city. The cathedral was first mentioned in 1195 documents as a “church on the market”. The cathedral gained its appearance in the Gothic style and the first tower in the middle of the XIV century. At the same time, the famous bronze pens in the shape of the head of a lion appeared, which have survived to this day.

The second tower was built in 1516. During the Napoleonic Wars, the church kept horses, which caused the building to decline, and only a decade later it was restored. In 1878, the bronze spire of the cathedral was completed. The World War II bombings did not damage the building.

At the very top of the cathedral, at an altitude of 132 meters, there is a beautiful observation deck, which can be reached by climbing 544 steps, between which there are recreation areas. All employees of the cathedral work here on a voluntary basis.
