Bergeddorf Castle
Schloss Bergedorf, Hamburg, Germany
Description:
Bergedorf Castle is the only surviving castle in Hamburg. It is built in the old village of Bille, on the right side of Hamburg, in the oldest part of the city. As everyone knows, Hamburg was a city of merchants, and such attributes of the aristocracy as palaces and castles were alien to it. And only Bergeddorf retained a small water castle. It was built at the beginning of the XIII century, when Bergedorf was under Danish rule and passed from Lübeck to Hamburg.
The history, as well as the interior of the buildings of Bergedorf Castle, is still not clearly clear. In documents, it is called a “strong house” and is mentioned for the first time in the XIII century. According to historians, Bergeddorf Castle resembles all the castles of Germany. Size 30 by 30 meters, it has four wings and is surrounded by a double moat with a drawbridge. Massive towers are a protective structure of the castle. Of course, there were also residential buildings. There were stables. There were also beautiful elements – fountains. Well, the interior was not too different from other similar castles in Germany.
At present, the castle houses the Museum of the Mountain Village - a branch of the Museum of History of Hamburg, which holds exhibitions about the culture of the region. Sometimes classical music concerts are held in the courtyard, and more recently, Hamburgers have a tradition of marrying inside the castle walls.
