University of Gottingen
Description:
The famous University of Göttingen is spread throughout the city, but in its old part there are two main buildings: Auditorium and Aula. The auditorium was built in 1862-1865 in the Romanesque style and inaugurated by King George V. The entrance to the building is decorated with four stone gentlemen (left to right): Hanover minister and first university registrar Baron Gerlach Adolf von Munchausen, founder of the University of Hanover Elector George II August, Duke Julius von Braunschweig and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the great German philosopher and mathematician of the XVII century, one of the founders of the foundational principles of this university. The reliefs between the windows depict portraits of leading scientists who worked at the University of Göttingen. Today, the Auditorium houses a university art collection, including a magnificent collection of Dutch masters of the seventeenth century.
