Meet Heidelberg
Description:
Visit Heidelberg with a wine sample at a brewery and lunch at a historic student cafe.
The dilapidated ghost castle on the mountain, the blue water of Neckar, the ancient bridge, the university buildings – all this gives the city a special charm. In Heidelberg, the stunning majestic Castle is a symbol of the city, several churches and museums (among them such interesting as a packing museum, or a pharmacy museum, five theaters, one philharmonic hall). Several bridges spread from one bank of the river to the other, one of them - in the Baroque style - is considered the most beautiful in Germany (manually restored by the residents of Heidelberg). The word “most” applies to a number of other Heidelberg attractions: there is Germany’s longest pedestrian street, the world’s largest wooden wine barrel – and, of course, the country’s oldest university, founded in 1386.
We'll walk through the Russian Heidelberg. In 1861, St. Petersburg University was closed due to student riots, and in the spring of 1862 a railway from St. Petersburg to the Prussian border was opened. A mass of unsettled students moved to Heidelberg. At the same time, the Russian government sent a group of graduates and young university teachers to Heidelberg “to prepare for the professorship.” Specially for the care of young Russian "Heidelbergers" was sent surgeon N. I. Pirogov, who enjoyed authority in Russian official circles and among young people.
In Heidelberg at different times studied poets Sasha Cherny and Osip Mandelstam, Sofia Kovalevskaya.
Borodin, Mendeleev and Timiryazev worked here
