Goslar

Amazing Harz - Goslar and other cities and castles

Description:

The town of Goslar, 80 km southeast of Hanover, is the true jewel of Harz! Already from the first steps taken along its cobbled streets, you feel the real, genuine aroma of time. After all, this city spared the destruction of the Second World War, it has preserved not only about 1000 half-timbered houses (and each of them is an architectural monument of the XV - XVII centuries), but also the memory of its glorious past. And here there is something to remember: from the X to the XII century. the city was the residence of the Holy Roman Emperors of the German nation (the memory of this is a majestic castle towering on a hill above the city), and thanks to the rich deposits of silver and other ores on Mount Rammelsberg, Goslar belonged to the richest cities of medieval Europe and played a crucial role in the Hanseatic Trade Union. Today, these mines, as well as the historical center of the city, are under the protection of UNESCO. The Rammelsberg mines, with their 1,000-year history, are the oldest in existence in Europe. Today, tourists, wearing protective yellow helmets, can go down on a special train in the literal center of the word into the bowels of the earth.

You can spend hours wandering around the city, admiring the imagination of medieval masters who made each house and unique and decorated it with intricate carvings. Coming for a few days are waiting for cozy hotels (many are located in the same old houses), and hungry - numerous restaurants, where they serve local delicacies and Bavarian beer.
