Leipzig Museum of Musical Instruments

Museum of Musical Instruments of the University of Leipzig, Johannisplatz 5-11, 04103 Leipzig

About the company:

The Museum of Musical Instruments at the University of Leipzig is part of the Grassi Museum and is one of the largest museums of musical instruments in Europe. The museum’s collection includes instruments from around the world.

In 1886, Paul de Wit opened a museum of musical instruments, in the early twentieth century he sold his entire collection to Wilhelm Heyer, and in 1926 this collection was bought by the University of Leipzig together with the Grassi Museum.

During the Second World War, a large part of the exhibits was lost, stolen and destroyed. After the war, the museum had to actively purchase new exhibits for the collection. At the moment, the oldest exhibits of the museum date back to the 16th century.
