Lübeck

Lübeck and Travemünde

Description:

After a tour of Lübeck, you can go to its suburb - Travemünde, located just 20 km from the center of Lübeck. At the beginning of the 12th century, a small village of fishermen and sailors arose at the confluence of the Trave River into the Baltic Sea. In 1187, Count Adolf III of Schauenburg built a fortress here to defend against Slavic and Viking attacks.

Since the 19th century began the rapid growth of resorts in the Baltic. Travemünde with its 4.5 km long sandy beach has become an ideal place to relax. There were built a sanatorium, hotels, casinos, promenade, and life boiled.

Every day steamers moored here from Copenhagen, Riga, St. Petersburg and other cities. Especially the connection with tsarist Russia was important for the resort. From there came many rich Russians, happy to spend their money in Travemünde. N. Gogol lived and was treated here, and I. Turgenev and F. Dostoevsky left a lot of hard rubles in the casino of the city.

During the tour of Travemünde you will get acquainted with the history of the city and its life today, you will feel not only the “aristocratic spirit” of the resort, but also the preserved charm of the cozy village of fishermen. After a walk, you can, of course, swim in the sea (in summer) and dine in one of the many fish restaurants.
