The devil on the steps of the Church of St. Mary

Schlusselbuden 13, Altstadt, Lubeck, D-23552, Germany

Description:

The Church of St. Mary is located in the city of Lübeck in northern Germany. It was built between 1250 and 1350 and played an important role in the development of local architecture, as it served as a model for 70 temples in this style in the Baltic region.

This majestic three-nave temple was built in the style of brick Gothic. Its central nave is 40 meters high. The height of the towers is 125 meters. This is the tallest brick church on the planet.

On the steps of the temple, on the side of the City Hall sits a cute devil. How is it that the sculpture of a representative of evil spirits was placed at the entrance to the holy place? Locals tell the story of how he came to be there.

When the construction of the church began, the devil decided that people began to build a wine cellar, and tried very hard to help them. When he realized that he had made a mistake and that it would be a temple, he became very angry and wanted to destroy it immediately. Residents of the city persuaded him not to blow up the church, and in return promised to fulfill his desire and build a wine cellar nearby, at the distance of the thrown stone. They kept their promise. And today, the cellar actually works near the church, as it was several centuries ago.

And in memory of this legend, this funny sculpture was installed, which, by the way, is not small in size - the devil turned out almost as tall as a human.
