Holstein Gate

Holstentorplatz, 23552 Lubeck, Germany

Description:

The Holstein Gate is a symbol of the Hansa. They are made in the style of brick Gothic. The Holstein Gate belonged to the fortresses of the Hansa. Until 1864, the gate complex had a cascade of four defensive structures. The gate served to protect the city from possible attack by the Danish kingdom and the dukes of Holstein.

Currently, the gate has two towers: north and south. They're connected by a central span. The distance between the towers is three and a half meters. Both towers are made of black and red brick. The windows are shaped like loopholes. In the central part of the Holstein Gate there is no first floor. It is replaced by a passage through a stone gate. The modern structure has five floors. On the pediment of the gate is an inscription carved in golden letters. The gate is always open.

By the way, the square in front of them is used by the local authorities for solemn events and spectacular concerts.
