Monument to Gutenberg in Mainz
Gutenbergplatz 10, 55116 Mainz, Germany
Description:
The monument to Gutenberg is located in the city of Mainz, Germany, in which at the end of the XIV century was born the world-famous creator of printing letters, jeweler and inventor.
The bronze monument was created in 1837 by Danish sculptor Biertel Thorvaldsen, who worked in the style of late classicism, and represents Johann Gutenberg in full height, in a simple cloak and cap, holding a book in his left hand as a symbol of his important invention.
In 2010, the restored monument, after two years of reconstruction, was re-erected on its former site, on a pedestal in the center of Gutenberg Square.
