Cathedral of Saints Martin and Stefan

Kleine Weiß gasse 12, 55116 Mainz, Germany

Description:

The Cathedral of Saints Martin and Stefan was built almost two centuries. There have been numerous fires on him all this time.

The construction of the building began on the initiative of Archbishop Villigis in the X century, and ended in the XIII century. The cathedral was built in the classical Romanesque style, but over time, through reconstructions and expansions, its external and internal appearance changed.

The central and side towers of the cathedral were built in the XVIII century in the Baroque style by sculptor Ignaz Michael Neumann. Inside the building are buried the Mainz archbishops. Also in the cathedral were crowned emperors of the Roman Empire: Henry II, Conrad II, Frederick II.

Two choirs in the temple are dedicated to Saints Martin and Stefan. The central nave is decorated with bas-reliefs with scenes from the life of Christ.
