Meersburg is one of the most picturesque and ancient cities on the shores of Lake Constance. Its history dates back more than a thousand years and is closely connected with trade, the bishops of Constanta, medieval castles and important trade routes between Germany, Switzerland and Italy. The name of the city is translated as “Castle on the Sea”, although it is not about the sea, but about Lake Constance.
Early settlements
People lived on the shores of Lake Constance in prehistoric times. Archaeologists find traces of Celtic and Roman settlements here.
Due to its favorable position at the intersection of trade routes, the place of the future Meersburg was of strategic importance in the early Middle Ages. Through the lake passed routes between northern Europe, the Alps and Italy.
Foundation of the fortress
According to an ancient tradition, the first fortress was founded around 630 by King Dagobert I of the Franks. Although historians dispute the exact date of construction, it is believed that this was when a fortified settlement on the high shore of the lake arose.
The position of the fortress was very advantageous:
high rocky shore;
control of crossings across the lake;
observation of trade routes;
protection from attack.
It was around the castle that the future city gradually grew.
Medieval period
The first documented mention of Meersburg dates back to 988. At that time, the fortress was already an important defensive point in the region.
In the XIII century, the city began to develop actively.
In 1233, Emperor Frederick II granted the settlement the right to hold a market. This greatly contributed to the development of trade and crafts.
Soon there were:
city walls;
commercial space;
artisan workshops;
warehouses for goods.
In 1299, Meersburg received city rights.
City of Bishops of Constanta
The bishops of Constanta played a special role in the history of the city.
From the XIII century Meersburg Castle became the possession of the Bishopric of Constantz. For many centuries the city was one of the most important residences of the prince-bishops.
After the beginning of the Reformation in the sixteenth century, the inhabitants of Constanta adopted Protestantism. Because of this, the bishops were forced to leave Constance and move their residence to Meersburg. The city actually became the administrative center of a huge church state.
During this period, people lived here:
bishops;
church officials;
nobles;
artisans and merchants.
Because of this, the city became rich and developed.
Siege of 1334
One of the most famous events of medieval history was the siege of the castle in 1334.
During the struggle for the position of Bishop of Constanta, the castle was surrounded by the emperor’s troops. It was during this siege that guns were used for the first time in German history. However, the fortress withstood the attack and was not taken.
This event made Meersburg Castle famous throughout the Holy Roman Empire.
Old castle
The main symbol of the city is Meersburg Castle.
It is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Germany. For many centuries, the fortress was repeatedly rebuilt, but never completely destroyed and was not captured by enemies.
The castle survived:
medieval wars;
Reformation;
Thirty Years' War;
the Napoleonic era;
world wars.
Today it is one of the main attractions of Lake Constance.
The Baroque Age
In the XVIII century, the prince-bishops decided to build a more modern and luxurious residence.
Thus appeared the New Castle Meersburg - a magnificent Baroque palace, the construction of which began in 1710. Once completed, it became the new residence of the bishops.
The city has acquired the features of a rich administrative center:
palaces have appeared;
Gardens were broken up;
New public buildings were built.
Napoleonic era
At the beginning of the XIX century there were serious changes.
In 1803, the church state was abolished during the secularization of German lands. Meersburg became part of Baden and ceased to be the capital of the bishopric.
Despite the loss of political importance, the city has preserved its cultural and historical heritage.
XIX century and tourism
In the XIX century Meersburg began to turn into a popular resort.
The city is especially famous for the German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, who lived in the old castle and spent the last years of her life here.
The development of shipping on Lake Constance and the construction of railways in the region led to an increase in tourist flow.
XX century
During both World Wars, the city escaped major destruction.
Thanks to this, the historical center has been preserved almost in its original form:
medieval streets;
city gates;
half-timbered houses;
old squares;
castles and palaces.
After World War II, Meersburg found itself in the French occupation zone of Germany. Later it became part of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.
