Description:
St. Peter’s Church is the oldest cathedral in Munich. It is also known as “Alter Peter” (Old Peter).
The construction of the church began in the XI century. It was built on the site of an old wooden church on the hill of Petersbergl in the center of Munich. Initially, the Church of St. Peter was built in the Romanesque style. In 1181, Otto I Wittelsbach ordered the church to be expanded, after which it was consecrated by Bishop Otto von Friesing. After about 100 years, the church was demolished. In its place was built a new church, consecrated in 1284. At the beginning of the XIV century, the Church of St. Peter was badly damaged by fire. It was restored in the Gothic style. After that, the church of St. Peter continued to change. In the XVIII century, it was redesigned by architect Johann Baptiste Zimmerman in the Rococo style. During World War II, St. Peter’s Church was severely destroyed. It was restored by 2000.
