Fishbrunnen Fountain
Marienplatz, 80331 Munchen, Germany
Description:
The Fishbrunnen Fountain is the oldest fountain in Munich. It was established in the city in 1343. It was originally intended to supply the market with water. Two centuries later, fish shops appeared near the fountain. Since then, it has received its second name – Fish Fountain. The Fishbrunnen fountain changed its appearance several times, only its octahedron shape remained.
In 1484, bronze figures appeared on the fountain, and a large sculpture of a young man was installed on top of it. Since then, the Fishbrunnen fountain has looked like a pyramid. However, in the middle of the twentieth century, part of the fountain was destroyed. The fountain acquired its modern appearance in 1945. The reconstruction was carried out by the famous German architect Joseph Henselmann.
Currently, there are three female figures on the facade of the fountain. There's fish on his column.
The Fishbrunnen Fountain is open all year round. In order for the water not to freeze in winter, it is first heated, and only then fed into the fountain systems.
