Fountain of the Wolf (Wolfsbrunnen)

80331 Munchen, Bavaria, Germany

Description:

If you slowly walk around Munich, there and here you will see intricate and unusual fountains. They're literally here at every turn. And this is not surprising, because, according to official data, the number of fountains in Munich has already exceeded 700. All of them, of course, decorate Munich and add to it some features and uniqueness. Each of these fountains has its own unique history.

No exception and the fountain Red Riding Hood or Wolf Fountain. Only one look at it is enough to, as if by the wave of a magic wand, transfer into the famous fairy tale, which everyone knows and remembers since childhood. The fountain is a column, at the foot of which, on four sides, water pours from the wolf’s mouth into a round stone bowl. The column is crowned by a composition from the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” – a cute girl in the community of the gray wolf.

This fountain owes its birth to the married couple Adolf and Apollonia Wolf. Thus, they decided to perpetuate their surname Wolf, which translates as “wolf”. To do this, they chose a very non-trivial idea - to beat their surname with the help of a children's fairy tale. Their idea was realized by famous sculptors Heinrich Dull and Georg Petzold. The fountain was installed in 1904 on the site of the city gates demolished in 1872. The Wolf Fountain is nestled in Munich’s small Am Kosttor Square, near Orlando Platz.
