Isar gate
Isartorplatz, 80331 Munchen, Germany
Description:
In the Middle Ages, Munich was surrounded by high fortress walls, making it impregnable for enemies. To this day, three gates have been preserved, which were part of the second line of city fortifications. Among them is the Isar Gate, the oldest city building, created in the XIV century.
The gates look so majestic and monumental that it is hard to believe their centuries-old history. Two massive octagonal towers are connected by a closed gallery at the level of the second tier, and under it - three identical arches. The gallery wall is full length decorated with a large fresco. It depicts the triumphal procession of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria after another military victory. Above the gate is a central tower 40 meters high. During the bombing of Munich in 1945, the building was badly damaged, so what we see today is mostly the good work of the builders and restorers.
Today in one of the towers there is a museum of the famous German comedian Karl Valentine. This man had a multifaceted talent: he wrote books and scripts, performed in a cabaret, played on stage and was fond of collecting photos of old Munich.
