National Theatre in Max Joseph Square
Max-Joseph-Platz 2, 80539 M nchen, Deutschland
Description:
The National Theatre of Munich is located in the heart of the city, on the square Max-Josef-Platz.
This opera house is the main venue of the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Ballet.
The National Theatre arose in Munich at the behest of the Bavarian King Maximilian I (the figure of the monarch is immortalized in the monument in front of the facade of the theater). This decision was born as a result of the visit of the king of Paris in the early XIX century.
The appearance of the main theater of Bavaria reminds that the building was built in the image of the Paris Odeon. The facade of the Munich National Theatre is also decorated with a colonnade. The ancient style of architecture is emphasized by the sculptural composition on the portico, where Apollo appears surrounded by the muses. And above these figures hovers Pegasus, lined with glass mosaics - a magnificent work of the XIX century by Leo Schwantaler.
Over the years, many famous German composers have staged their operas there. For example, Wagner presented to the public his masterpieces “Gold of the Rhine” and “Valkyrie”, and Strauss – “Day of Peace” and “Capriccio”.
