Sculpture of the Virgin Mary in Marienplatz Square
Description:
Marienplatz is more than just a square. In fact, the history of the city of Munich begins with Marienplatz. In ancient times, trade routes crossed at this place. Periodically clashing with each other, traders exchanged goods. Subsequently, this led to the formation of a whole market around which people began to build houses and taverns. In those days, the square had another name - Marketnplatz, which translates as "market square".
Today, the main attraction of the square is the column of the Virgin Mary. It was erected in the center of Munich in 1635, in honor of the end of the Thirty Years' War and the victory over the plague epidemic. In honor of this sculpture in 1854, the square received its current name - Marienplatz.
