Meat bridge

Germany, Bavaria, Nuremberg

Description:

At the narrowest point of the Pegnitz River, the first bridge was built at Nuremberg in 1200. The Meat Bridge was first mentioned in a written source in 1335. So the bridge was named because of the nearby Meat House. Damaged by fires and floods, the wooden bridge was dismantled and rebuilt nanonewly from stone with two arches and one support pole.

This structure was fragile, it could not resist the flood that occurred in 1595. In 1598, the restoration of the building was completed. As a result, the Meat Bridge became one-arched with a stone ornamented portal and a bull figure at the top. The length of its central arch is 27 meters, the height of the supporting pillars is 4.2 meters. This is how the bridge remains today. In 1974, it was listed as a historical monument.
