Nuremberg fortress
Burg 13, 90403 Nurnberg, Germany
Description:
Nuremberg Fortress, which is a monumental architectural monument of the medieval period, towers over the Old Town and is one of the main attractions of the city. From this point there are magnificent panoramas of the historical part of Nuremberg, as well as the nearby quarter of artisans. For the convenience of tourists in the southern part of the fortress, an observation deck is equipped, from which the surroundings are perfectly visible within a radius of more than ten kilometers.
For the construction of the fortress, King Conrad II chose the highest place - the top of the sandstone rock, and in the first half of the XI century began work on the construction of fortress walls. Gradually, a city was formed around the fortress, and in 1105 a burggrave was formed. A little more than a hundred years later, by decree of Emperor Frederick II, Nuremberg gained the status of an imperial city. In 1427, the castle was sold to the city authorities by the last burgher of Nuremberg, Frederick VI Hohenzollern.
Fortifications that stood for several centuries were seriously damaged during the Second World War, but immediately after its end were completely reconstructed. Now it is one of the most popular monuments of architecture. Archaeological excavations are carried out on the territory of the fortress, during which scientists discovered traces of ancient settlements founded before 1000. One of these finds was the foundation of a round watchtower, the thickness of which exceeded two meters, as well as numerous artifacts.
