Oberhouse Fortress
Description:
Passau. Behind the powerful stone walls of the Oberhouse Fortress stands an elegant, dazzling white castle of bishops. The fortress and castle were not built to protect the city from enemies and external disasters. This fortification appeared as a result of the opposition of the power of bishops and citizens who sought independence and freedom.
When in 1298 the citizens of Passau rebelled against the power of the bishop, he took the city under fire from his well-fortified, high-positioned fortress, so that the townspeople were forced to surrender and for another 6 centuries to submit to the power of the powerful prince - bishop, whose privileges were approved by the Holy Roman Emperor in 1217.
In 1822, the castle became the "Bavarian Bastille" - a prison for political prisoners, and only in 1932 passed into the possession of the city. Now there are expositions in its premises.
