Berlin Tempelhof Airport

Description:

The airport has been closed to passengers since 2008. It is located on the territory of the former military parade ground, which in the early twentieth century served as a parade ground for drill training. In 1909, Orville Wright launched his first plane. Later, the parade ground was strengthened, and in 1923 two hangars were built here. In the 30s, a full-fledged airport was already built here, which became a flight base for the Lufthansa company.

The airport building is located inside the ring road and has the shape of a semicircle. At the time of its opening, it was the largest building in the world around the perimeter until the Americans built the Pentagon. For its time, it was a very modern building, which has not only a ground floor, but also an underground one, with fairly well-equipped bomb shelters. In some of them you can see graffiti. The building also has a special hall with chemical protection filters, which were planned to be used in case of a chemical attack. The airport has its own rather modern at the time heat station, and even a fairly well-equipped gym for employees.

The airfield has such good coverage that even today it is possible to ride a bicycle or roller skates.
