Nicolaikirche Church
Am Alten Markt 14467 Potsdam, Germany
Description:
The Evangelical Church of St. Nicholas, located on the Old Market Square, is one of the unofficial symbols of Potsdam.
The building was built in 1837 in the classic style on the model of the French Pantheon by Carl Friedrich Schinkel. The work was led by Friedrich August Stüler. The dome of the cathedral was built later. As an example, the London Cathedral of St. Peter was used.
The church is built in the form of a Greek cross. The building is decorated with images of Old Testament prophets by artist Peter von Cornelius. The interior with beautiful stained glass windows and a dome looks quite modern.
During World War II, the church was heavily damaged by bombing. In full accordance with the original drawings, it was restored in 1981.
