City Gallery in Firzen Park

Am Rathauspark 1, 41747 Viersen, Germany

Description:

The Firsen City Gallery has been in existence since 1981. It is located in the city center, in a mansion of the late XIX century. The beautiful building, made in the neo-Renaissance style, is surrounded by an ancient park, which also became a kind of exhibition hall. The park serves as a beautiful frame for the museum building, so the gallery is officially called "Gallery in the Park".

Today the gallery contains several collections. The beginning of one of them, the most significant in historical and artistic senses, was laid in the early 60s of the last century. Its founder is considered the head of the city administration Van Kaldenkerken. We are talking about a collection of graphic works of outstanding artists from the XV century to the present day. More than 1000 sheets of graphics, the authorship of which belongs to Rebrant, Rubens, Dürer, make the collection unique. And these are not all the great names presented in the exhibition. The works of Picasso, Chagall, Fernand Leger, Joan Miro occupy a worthy place in the halls of the gallery. Interesting graphics of German expressionists: Lionel Feininger, Kokoschka, Paul Klee and Emil Nolde.

The remarkable shady park around the gallery features a collection of modern sculpture created over the past 25 years with donations from American businessman and former Firzen resident William Paul. It consists of ten works by German and American avant-garde artists. At first, the sculptures caused some rejection among local residents, but, collected in a single collection, became over time an integral part of the park ensemble of the gallery.
