Holten Castle

Kastellstrase 56, Oberhausen, Germany

Description:

You can meet Holten Castle in the German city of Oberhausen, in the Sterkarde area. The castle is distinguished by its rather modest appearance: without towers, spires and bridges. But despite all this, he has some charisma. The history of the castle begins in 1307, when Count Engelbert II von Mark received the building in a dowry from the bride. At that time, the building consisted of two parts: the main and advanced.

The fortress has an ancient defensive system: ditches and a high shaft. During the Eighty Years' War, the castle was captured by Spanish troops. During the Thirty Years’ War, the castle was occupied by Hesse. By 1640, the damage to the castle reached enormous proportions.

Restoration of the castle began only in 1700, when it fell into the possession of Prussia. Today, tourists and residents of Oberhausen are presented only the eastern part of the castle, the construction of which dates back to the XVI century. The building housed a school, and now there are trainings of the sports and shooting society.
