Neu-Isenburg Castle
Description:
On the rocky shores of Lake Baldenisee are the ruins of the once picturesque castle of Neu-Isenburg. If you love archaeology and history, be sure to visit this wonderful place. The construction of the castle dates back to the middle of the XIII century. The building was owned by Baron Dietrich von Alten-Isenburg, who received it instead of his residence in Hattingen. During the feudal background of 1288 the castle was destroyed.
By the beginning of the last century, the once huge and beautiful fortress was a pile of ruins. Archaeologists conducted many excavations, the results of which are presented in the museums of Essen, but the expensive restoration of the castle was refused.
Today, tourists can see the remains of a protective fortress wall and the remains of a watchtower. The place is famous for its popularity among fans of role-playing games. In Essen, whole festivals dedicated to knightly tournaments are held.
