Witringen Castle

Wasserschloss Wittringen, Burgstrase 64, Gladbeck, Germany

Description:

Witringen Castle is located in the forest park of the German city of Gladbeck. The complex of buildings is located on the island and surrounded by a reservoir. The first historical mention of the castle dates back to 1263. The owner of the castle was the knight Ludolfus de Witring, who came from the Orst family. Unfortunately, the founder of the castle is unknown.

In 1347, Count Dietrich of Cleves secured possession of the castle to his grandson Ludolfus Phillip. Soon the castle was inherited by Ludolfus’ son-in-law, Heinrich von Brachtbeck. The Thirty Years' War caused considerable damage to Witringen Castle. The Hesse mercenaries almost completely destroyed it. In 1650, a two-storey house was built in the western part of the rectangular island, which complemented the overall architecture of the castle.

In 1922 the castle was sold to the town of Gladbeck for 3.75 million marks. In 1928, the Gladbek Museum was opened in the building. Fans of delicious dishes and plunge into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, the castle offers to visit the restaurant. The place is especially attractive for newlyweds.
