Stone Bridge - Steinernen Br cke
Description:
The stone bridge (Steinernen Br cke) is located in the German city of Regensburg. It was fully completed in the 40s of the XII century, and the construction itself lasted 11 years.
Construction of the bridge began on the orders of Louis VII to ensure the crossing of the Danube to the crusaders of the Second Crusade. For 8 centuries, the stone bridge was the only river crossing in the city.
A sculpture of a boy (Bruckmandl) was erected on the bridge in 1446. However, at the moment, the installed sculpture is a little more than 150 years old.
The bridge has its own legend of creation. Allegedly, the architect of the bridge made a deal with the devil to help complete the construction of the bridge. Under the terms of the deal, the first three souls to set foot on the bridge were to pick up the devil. But, the architect of the bridge outsmarted the unclean, letting a chicken, a rooster and a dog across the finished bridge. Angry, the devil wanted to destroy the bridge, but he never succeeded.
