Rostock

Sprout - brick gothic and socialism

Description:

The ancient Hanseatic town of Rostock is the largest city in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was a major port of the GDR and the center of shipbuilding in East Germany.

The former Slavic settlement arose on the banks of the Varnov River in the 12th century.

Today in the architecture of the city you can observe an amazing combination of Hanseatic brick Gothic with the architecture of the GDR-era.

The old city center fascinates with its buildings, which we will see during a walking tour: the City Hall, the Church of St. Mary with an astronomical clock of the 15th century, the remains of the city wall and gates, former port warehouses on the Varnov embankment, the monastery of the Holy Cross, the building of one of the oldest German universities, the Fountain of Joy, which has a very indecent name among the people, and much more.

During the tour you will learn details about the history of the city and its inhabitants, why the number “7” is the symbol of Rostock, and you can just enjoy a walk through the charming city center.
