Palace of Electors Trier

Willy-Brandt-Platz 3, 54290 Trier, Deutschland

Description:

The Electoral Palace is the residence of the Archbishops of Trier. It is located near the Market Square in the Old Town. It was built in several stages over almost a century, from 1599 to 1660. On the territory of the building was the ancient Roman basilica of Constantine, which had to be partially dismantled, as it was later built into the Palace of Electors. It was an obvious contrast, because the basilica is made in the style of Romanesque architecture, and the painted pink palace combined features of both the Renaissance and the rococo.

During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged, but the architects faithfully rebuilt it. The appearance of the palace of electors amazes with unpredictability. Made in pink style, it is decorated with white pseudo-antique sculptures of gods and gilded ornaments. In the XVIII century, the architect Johann Zeitz added to all this also a railing of balconies with ornaments in the form of a shell, which is considered a real masterpiece of German Baroque.

Today, the northern part of the building is at the disposal of Protestants, concerts and various events are held in the southern wing, and not only tourists, but also locals walk peacefully in the palace park.
